Local organic food fresh from the farm, straight to families

who need it most

Farms to Friends is about local food security & our most vulnerable residents.

Too often the most marginalized and vulnerable people are hit the hardest by emergencies and disasters. The COVID-19 pandemic is no exception.

EcoSociety launched a new program last year to support 54 families and seniors in need to access healthy food grown locally in the West Kootenays. EcoSociety’s staff and team of volunteers provided weekly no contact delivery to the homes of those in need.

With your support and donations, we’re continuing Farms to Friends in 2021. Working with local farms, we are bringing weekly boxes of fresh, local products to these people every week. And thanks to your continuing support, we’ve grown Farms to Friends to now reach 58 families.

We pick up the boxes from the producers and deliver them to community members’ doorsteps. With the support of our local network of volunteers, we are using safety protocols for low contact and low risk of transmitting COVID.

We’re also providing simple recipes which explain how to use the products. Kootenay Co-op and Nelson Community Food Centre have provided the recipes.

Our health is tied to our environment. While we continue to need a guaranteed basic monthly income for all people, focusing on food security during the pandemic, through Farms to Friends, helps families and seniors eat healthy local food.

Program Impact

Andrew O’Kane is one of the volunteers in Trail who helps deliver the bags of produce each week:

“I like it that we are supporting local organic growers by purchasing their produce for four months straight. It’s been great delivering the bags of vegetables, just getting out there and seeing people. Although they all know I’ll be coming, they are all pleasantly surprised when I arrive every Thursday afternoon,” he says. “It’s a really practical example of supporting food security in the Kootenays from producer to consumer.”

Victoria McAllister, in Balfour, helped us connect with families in need in her area:

“I have been the principal at Redfish Elementary, a K-7 school near Balfour for the past two years. We were worried about how those families would be supported through the summer. We were thrilled when the EcoSociety contacted us to see if we thought some families might want fruit and veggie boxes brought right to the community. Those families who have been able to access this weekly opportunity for healthy, local, easily accessible food are feeling supported and connected. And it makes me happy knowing our students whose families have been really disrupted by this bumpy economic time are getting healthy food while school is out. Huge gratitude to the EcoSociety and its supporters for making this happen.”

It’s about community pulling together. We can live better.
