Position Title: EcoSociety’s Part time Community Organizer
Start date: As soon as possible
End date: December 31, 2020, extension possible pending funding
Hours per week: 20
Salary: $19,760 annually
Location: West Kootenays, based from home (offices closed due to COVID)

Since 1994, West Kootenay EcoSociety works to preserve wild places, air and water for future generations; to take action to reduce the crisis of climate change; and to promote sustainable local food systems. Job Description:

Working with our staff and volunteers, the Community Organizer will organize community engagement throughout the West Kootenay region using digital systems. The Community Organizer will build grassroots volunteer community teams to tackle the big climate, conservation and food issues in the West Kootenays. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate volunteer teams to advance EcoSociety’s initiatives 
  • Recruit, train and coach volunteer leaders
  • Develop materials and processes to support volunteer teams’ work
  • Supporting building EcoSociety’s new database and maintain database
  • Facilitate meetings and relationship building with individuals and organizations
  • Write blogs, e-updates, fundraising appeals and social media posts
  • Develop and post content on EcoSociety’s website
  • Organize online presentations to and meetings with key stakeholders
  • Organize and host events online
  • Participate in organizational planning and staff activities
  • Build relationships and work collaboratively with partner organizations

Required Qualifications:

  • Passion for working to fulfill EcoSociety’s mission
  • Outgoing personality, excellent listening skills and drive to connect with people of diverse backgrounds
  • At least 1 year experience doing community organizing, mobilizing or public engagement, ideally using engagement organizing model
  • Organizing skills must include: digital/remote organizing and working in teams
  • Team player and problem solver, but must be able to work independently
  • Outstanding verbal and written communicator, ability to tell compelling stories
  • Comfortable and excited to promote EcoSociety’s work and fundraise from individuals
  • Attention to detail
  • Expert-intermediate knowledge of: Microsoft Office, Google Drive, email management, and social media best practices
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • Ability to work flexible hours, like evenings and weekends at time, to organize with volunteer community members’ schedules 
  • Connected to local community or strong desire to build connections in the community
  • Desire to strive to be inclusive and diverse in organizing practice
  • Understanding of climate, conservation, food and social justice issues
  • Group facilitation experience
  • Experience organizing in campaign setting preferred
  • Experience working for non-profits preferred
  • Experience working with media and external communications preferred
  • Experience using databases and managing data is an asset
  • Valid drivers’ licence is an asset
