Nelson’s MarketFest this Friday!

Come one, come all! Downtown Nelson will be bustling with artisans, community and great food this Friday August 23rd from 6-10 pm at MarketFest, and we want you to join us!

This year we are trying to create an even better, healthier and safer community by improving our waste management and promoting the transition to 100% renewable energy in the Kootenays.

Can you join in on the fun and come out to MarketFest, downtown Nelson, on Friday, August 23rd from 6-10 pm?

A note from our Trail summer outreach coordinator, Alyssa:

When I was 6 years old I felt inspired to cook a magic potion. My mother having long given up on the idea of me sitting quietly, and having two younger children to look after, played along and gave me a pot. Dragging a chair from cupboard to cupboard I collected everything I could reach and my pot began to fill.

Eventually, my mother returned to the kitchen and to my disappointment she refused to eat the wonderful potion I had cooked especially for her. She instructed me to go dump my hard work into the chicken coop. Outside I went, struggling to carry the heavy pot. As I was walking towards the chickens my aunt pulled into the driveway. I was excited to have another person to show my potion.

“What are you going to do with that?” she asked.

“Feeding it to the chickens!” I responded with the enthusiasm of a 6-year-old. She frowned and like my mother seemed to lack appreciation of my creation. She said “you know some children are starving, they have nothing to eat and you just wasted a lot of good food”. At that moment I felt like I had taken food right out of the mouths of hungry babies. It was my first time recognizing how lucky I am.

The experience made me realize that the world can be unjust and that some people like myself had more food than we needed while others did not. Since then I have felt motivated to put my energy into undoing the injustices of the world and trying to make the world a better place for everyone.

When I first learned about climate change in school years later, I realized that climate change would cause food shortages and many other unjust impacts. As humans we have been acting like 6 year old me, being wasteful of the resources we have without understanding the consequences of our actions and how they will impact the earth.

That is why I think MarketFest and the 100% renewable energy campaign are incredibly important. With every attendee and signature comes increased awareness and a pledge to work together with our local communities to create healthier wild places.

So please, come on out to MarketFest this Friday, August 23rd from 6-10 pm to celebrate our great communities together!

For our community,

Alyssa

P.S. Will you pitch-in with a donation of $25, $50 or $100 right now to make sure together we can continue to build and support a better community in the West Kootenays?
